April Volunteer of the Month, Tristyn
What are your name and pronouns? My name is Tristyn, I use he/him pronouns.
How did you get involved with QMUNITY?
I met Qmunity volunteers who were tabling at a community event and spent quite a bit of time talking to them about what Qmunity offered the community and what resources were lacking. I was new to Vancouver and had been looking for an opportunity to volunteer and connect with the community again, so I reached out and got started with volunteering not long after that first connection.
Tell me a bit about yourself! I’m originally from the United States, but I’m so happy to be living in Canada now! I am a huge comic book and anime nerd. I work in employment services and am passionate about mental health and social services in my day to day life.
What’s your favourite part of volunteering at QMUNITY? The connections I get to make with a huge variety of people. I love meeting new folks!
Tell me a short story of an interaction at QMUNITY that stands out for you.
I can’t pick just one! I really love hearing about people’s personal successes and accomplishments. When people can come into a group and share something exciting that is happening in their life, or even something small that has made their day a bit brighter, those are the interactions and experiences that always stand out for me. I am happy to support people in both the high and low moments of their lives, but the highs are what make the days feel brighter.
What does your happy place look like? My happy place is outside at the beach or near the water. I love the ocean and feel so lucky that I get to live in a place that allows me to visit it whenever I need a break.
What is your favourite food and why? I really love sweets, especially sweet breakfast pastries. Because they’re sweet and there are so many different kinds!
What items could you not survive without? Books and craft supplies like yarn! I love doing crafts – I could do without technology if I had something to do with my hands.
What’s your favourite way to spend a day in Vancouver? Go to Stanley Park. There is so much to do there!
