Coordinator, Youth Engagement

QMUNITY operates on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of Indigenous peoples across British Columbia. In particular, QMUNITY offices are located on the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

About QMUNITY: QMUNITY is BC’s 2SLBGTQIA+ community hub and exists to improve queer, trans, and Two-Spirit lives. We do this in three ways: by supporting individuals, by strengthening our communities, and by leading the way towards legal and lived equality. We operate with 15 staff, and a large pool of volunteers.

Purpose:  The Youth Engagement Coordinator contributes to the overall success of the organization by effectively planning and implementing social youth programs, drop-in spaces and events.  This role requires strong communication and leadership abilities as you will be coordinating youth volunteers, working with other service providers, and supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ youth with a variety of needs.

Accountability: The Youth Engagement Coordinator is directly accountable to the Manager, Programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Internal (60%)
    • Plan and implement Youth Drop-In on Fridays (4-6pm) basis including fun, educational, social justice-oriented, and capacity-building activities for ongoing youth programming.
    • Supervise and schedule volunteers and practicum students for the Youth Program.
    • Recruit for and lead youth advisory groups and continuously engage youth in discussions, planning and operations.
    • Monthly record-keeping and reporting and performance of other duties as assigned.
    • Plan, organize, implement, and supervise events for queer and ally youth (e.g.  Queer Prom, Pride BBQ, and other youth events).
    • Respond to email and phone enquiries from youth, caregivers and service providers looking for QMUNITY youth programming.
    • Collaborating with other QMUNITY staff to maintain a respectful and effective service-provision.
    • BBB Program Coordinating and execution; sending out BBB orders, tracking orders, ensuring that we have enough stock
  1. External (40%)
    • Responding to external enquiries, engagements, collaborations with organizations and foundations as necessary.
    • Coordinate with partner organizations and school GSAs around events, workshops, speaking engagements etc. 
    • Maintain an outreach strategy for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth through other community-based programs, schools, services and organizations. 
    • As required, attend external events on behalf of QMUNITY, sometimes in evenings and on weekends
    • BBB Program Coordinating with remote fitting rooms

Desired Skills:

  • An outgoing, creative communicator and facilitator with strong verbal and written skills
  • Experience working with youth
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
  • An understanding of the 2SLGBTQIA+ experience, and a desire for creating spaces and content that lifts up the most marginalized and under-served members of the community
  • An interest in community development and non-profit coalition
  • An understanding of and appreciation for QMUNITY’s mission to improve queer, trans, and Two-Spirit lives through support, connection, and leadership

Hours of work: 

This is a permanent full-time unionized position (37.5 hours/week). The hours of work are Monday to Thursday, 10am to 6pm and Friday 11am to 7pm to support the Youth Drop-In. Please note that this position may require some evening and weekend work. Self-scheduling throughout the work week is common practice. Overtime policies allow for staff to opt for overtime pay, or time-off in lieu. 

Compensation for this position is $26.46 per hour as well as registration into the Multi Sector Pension Plan. Note that this agreement is under review. Comprehensive benefits package (extended health and dental insurance), as well as supplemental $500/year health & wellness credit provided by QMUNITY after a three month probation period.
