The Organization:  QMUNITY is BC’s 2SLBGTQIA+ community hub and exists to improve queer, trans, and Two Spirit lives. We do this in three ways: by supporting individuals, by strengthening our communities, and by leading the way towards legal and lived equality. We operate with 19 staff, and a large pool of volunteers.

QMUNITY operates on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of Indigenous peoples across British Columbia. In particular, QMUNITY offices are located on the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Purpose: Programs Support serves to support our programs through coverage of programs and events. This support will mainly be through drop-in program facilitation in Seniors, Youth, and TransID. They will sometimes be working with other staff and volunteers. This role will involve facilitating and supporting  in-person and virtual drop-ins to fill-in for regular program staff when they are on leave or have scheduling conflicts. 

Accountability: The Programs Support reports to the Manager, Programs & Services. QMUNITY is a unionized workplace and staff are represented by CUPE 1936. This position is within the bargaining unit as a casual employee.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate group drop-ins, including (minimal) set-up and takedown mainly for the Seniors Program and Youth Program
  • As required, attend workshops and, trainings
  • Provide one-on-one support for 2SLGBTQIA+ clients 
  • As required, provide advocacy for 2SLGBTQIA+ clients to management and other staff to help them access appropriate services and support at other organizations and institutions 
  • Collaborate with QMUNITY management, staff and volunteers on projects and activities that strengthen QMUNITY’s programs and services 
  • Coordinate volunteers and practicum students when necessary
  • Maintain accurate logs
  • Risk management within the context of a program. This sometimes involves de-escalation, or making a judgement of when to call a manager for support. 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Experience in social service either program support or program engagement 
  • Combination of education and experience related to working with 2SLGBTQIA+ people in a community setting
  • Strong knowledge of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and issues; high sense of responsibility and commitment to the mission of QMUNITY 

Core Competencies:

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a team as well as working independently
  • Able to organize, multi-task, problem-solve and remain flexible within a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex and critical situations like crisis intervention 

Technical Skills:

  • Organised, results-oriented self-starter, able to work under pressure and complete multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license would be an asset but no required

Requirements: 

  • Criminal records check (vulnerable sector check only)
  • To follow all policies and procedures of the organization
  • The ability to handle confidential/sensitive information appropriately
  • Commitment to a high standard of service and an atmosphere of respect and dignity in all aspects of the program

Salary: $28.25/hr; as a casual employee, you will be paid an additional 10.8% in lieu of benefits.

Hours of Work: This position is a casual position and will be called in when we need support. The hours that we sometimes need coverage for are Mondays 1PM – 3PM, Tuesdays  2:30PM to 4:30 PM, Wednesdays 4PM to 6PM, Thursdays 2:30 – 4:30 PM, Fridays 4PM – 6PM. The successful candidate will not be required to say yes to any or all those hours and won’t be called in for less than 2 hours of work. 

Accessibility: QMUNITY’s main office space is located on the second level of the building.  Applicants should be aware that there is a flight of 23 stairs to reach the office.

COVID-19: Service delivery is primarily conducted in-person. Our O&EHS committee continues to monitor on-going developments with COVID-19 and adjusts office policies based on public health guidance.
