A New 2SLGBTQIA+ Employment Support Service is coming to BC
February 22, 2022
February 22, 2021 (Vancouver, BC) – In partnership with YWCA Metro Vancouver, QMUNITY is launching an Employment Support Service that will deliver employment skills training and support to queer, trans, and Two-Spirit folks in BC.
Over the course of 2021, QMUNITY participated in internal community consultations where emerging priorities focused around employment needs within the queer, trans, and Two-Spirit community.
“For a lot of folks within the community, the last couple of years have led to unprecedented job loss and loss of income,” says Anoop Gill, Co-Executive Director for QMUNITY. “We hope this program will create more, and better opportunities to connect 2SLGBTQIA+ talent with jobs that are queer-competent, safe, and meaningful.”
Research by the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion found that 30% of LGBTQ employees in Canada report experiencing discrimination in the workplace. Compare that to only 3% of non-LGBTQ employees.
The program – entitled the PRISM Employment Support Service (ESS) – will connect members of the community with jobs, and also provide employment coaching and support through the process of selecting, applying, and interviewing for jobs that pertain to specific skills, experiences, and interests.
“We are thrilled to support members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community as they navigate the job market and achieve their personal career goals,” says Michelle Sing, Interim CEO with YWCA Metro Vancouver. “Advancing gender equity is the foundation of the YWCA’s work, and we are thrilled to partner with the team at QMUNITY and learn from their expertise.”
The PRISM Employment Support Service is set to launch in March 2022, but the community is invited to pre-register their expression of interests through this online form as of today.
