Health Check – New HIV Strain Discovered in Saskatchewan

July 27, 2018

Researchers based at the BC Centre for Exellence in HIV/AIDS and Simon Fraser University have discovered a mutated strain of HIV circulating in Saskatchewan, particularly among Indigenous communities. If untreated, the strain leads to faster-developing AIDS-related illnesses.

Indigenous people are about 16% of Saskatchewan’s population, but represent almost 80% of HIV positive people in the province.

We must continue to advocate for access to HIV testing and treatment, as well as improving education about and access to preventative measures such as condoms and safe injection supplies and sites.

Not sure about your HIV status? The Bute Street Clinic is open Monday – Friday, 10:30-6:30. Testing is free to all and can be anonymous.
