[VANCOUVER, BC, Apr. 30, 2019] Support QMUNITY’s 15th Annual International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOT) breakfast, presented by Vancity and a benefit for QMUNITY. This sold out event provides awareness on the discrimination faced by the LGBTQ2S+ community around the world. Friday, May 17th, the Sheraton Wall Centre will become our backdrop as guests will enjoy a great morning breakfast, empowering speeches and entertainment. Doors open at 6:45 am.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia breakfast attracts an enthusiastic crowd of community, business, and political leaders, and holds a place of prominence on Vancouver’s community calendar. With an official proclamation from the Province and the City of Vancouver, movers and shakers from many different organizations, corporations, and sectors celebrate and commit to the life-changing work QMUNITY undertakes.

Keynote Speaker: Meera Dhebar MSW

Title: The Unnamed Practice: Centering Queerness in the Counselling Relationship

Meera has been a practicing social worker in community-based organizations since 1995. Originally from Toronto, she moved to Vancouver in 2012. She currently supervises QMUNITY’s counselling program. Inspired to improve the program’s capacity, Meera trained in narrative therapy and moved towards opening her own private practice. As Meera developed her therapeutic skills, her supervisory skills also improved. “The thing is, working in this queer context was incredibly powerful. I was struck by the nature of our language and community and wanted to learn how to centre queerness in all of my work more deeply.”

Meera’s presentation draws on her PhD dissertation, looking at the many gaps and challenges in how queer identities and queer informed counselling practices are conceptualized in social work and counselling educational programs, as well as a professional practice. As Clinical Supervisor she bridges academic theory with queer informed counselling practices and the lived experience of queer identities. QMUNITY’s counselling team and clients greatly benefit from this approach.
