January Volunteer of the Month: Lisa M.
January 6, 2016
January’s amazing volunteer of the month is Lisa M.
Lisa’s a full time student just finishing up her degree in criminology and sociology at Kwantlen Polytechnic. After she graduates she hopes to join the Canadian Forces as a part time reservist and eventually transition to the Vancouver police department. She’s basically a local, having moved to Vancouver from Saskatchewan when she was only eight years old.
So, Lisa. How did you get involved with QMUNITY?
Well, I’ve been out for ten years, but I had occasion to look at some of my old friends groups and ended up deciding to let go of a lot of people. I looked into volunteering at QMUNITY because I wanted to reach out and connect, make new friends and give back. I actually volunteer all over the place. I work with Burnaby Youth Corrections, and one of my favourite volunteer activities is called ‘Beauty Night’, basically we go into the downtown East Side and give people beauty treatments. I’ve been doing that for over a year.
And what is your favourite thing about QMUNITY?
Oh, it’s got to be seeing everyone as they walk up the stairs, especially when it’s raining or cold outside. They look up and you nearly always get a big smile and they look so happy to see you. It’s the best.
On a more serious note, what would your weapon of choice for the zombie apocalypse be?
Tough question! I think I have to say Sriracha.
I’m gonna get caught eventually, I know I can outrun fifty, but not ten thousand. If they’re gonna catch me anyways, I might as well make a tasty meal. I’m a realist.
Choose five books to take to a desert island!
To Kill A Mockingbird, Lord of the Flies, Shakespeare, the Help, The Seeker’s guide.
And a bonus TV show?
Grey’s Anatomy & spinoff, because that totally counts as the same series!
If you were a beverage, what would you be?
Tequila, straight (queer!) up, no frills
If you could have one wish what you would wish for?
Everyone would be able to see themselves through the eyes of someone who loves them.
And finally, tell us, what is your favourite time of year?
I’d have to say Spring, because everything is growing and new, perking up; I’m addicted to change.
Thank you, Lisa. Your commitment to improve queer and trans makes a big difference for the many folks who walk up QMUNITY’s stairs daily.
