QMUNITY is saddened by the recent decampment and escalation in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. We are deeply concerned with the tactics being used against marginalized and street-entrenched people, many of whom are queer, trans, and Two-Spirit, including youth. These communities face some of the highest levels of housing insecurity and discrimination. QMUNITY is also alert to the ongoing lack of shelter spaces in Vancouver, and that many shelters are unsafe or inaccessible for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

As an organization, QMUNITY continues its efforts to offer and develop low-barrier access to queer, trans, and Two Spirit programs and services. We call on the City of Vancouver to focus on aid for community-centered and community-led initiatives that support the safety of the most vulnerable members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Evidence-based, compassionate approaches to the housing crisis necessitate social support and resource provision to achieve truly safe and accessible housing for all.

Through community collaboration, consultation, harm reduction, and trauma-informed practices, we know that we – as a community – can do better.
