We would like to recognize Mathew G. for his compassionate, diligent and supportive presence as an Information and Referral Specialist.

Mathew has been working at QMUNITY since June, 2013, when he sought out a way to connect with the queer community and decided to donate his time and energy as a volunteer. Mathew loves making a difference, especially when it comes to connecting people with the resources they need. His favourite way to spend his shift is talking to people who have dropped in for a chat, because he loves interacting with the wonderful and diverse community that the centre supports.

Mathew is a full time student at SFU studying psychology, specialising in research on couples’ communication. He has noticed a gap in knowledge when it comes to attending to queer mental health, which is part of the reason he wants to continue to study. He’s hoping to take his Masters at SFU so he can dedicate his career to helping the queer community. Mathew has shown his commitment to volunteering in many ways, including tabling and helping out at various events including Stack the Rack, and the queer dance during Pride.

When he’s not making a difference with his volunteering, or studying for his degree, Mathew enjoys playing music, including the piano and bass guitar. He also loves reading, especially suspense and action books, and he dreams of travelling. His hope for this summer is to spend it hiking and camping on Vancouver Island

Mathew, we thank you for your kind and approachable nature and the fun energy you bring to the front desk. Your enthusiasm and patience provides a wonderful first contact at the front desk, and we hope you continue to be part of QMUNITY for many years to come.
