September Volunteer of the Month: Aaron P.

September 15, 2015

We recognize Aaron P. for his dedication, passion and empathy as a volunteer counsellor.

Aaron began volunteering with QMUNITY in July of 2014, as part of his Masters of Counselling. He completed his practicum placement with QMUNITY in a fourteen month long stint, and then transitioned to being a regular volunteer when he successfully finished his Masters program.

Aaron loves the infrastructure QMUNITY provides to the community. As such a well-known and well-loved centre, people really trust the services provided, and he feels privileged to share that trust as a counsellor at the centre.

Originally from Squamish, he moved down to Vancouver in part because of QMUNITY—he knew that he wanted to do his practicum at the centre! As his courses drew to a close, he found out about an open position at HIM, the Health Initiative for Men, and applied for the position.

Working at HIM has allowed him to work closely with gay men’s mental health, but he continues to volunteer at QMUNITY because it is a way to reach every part of the LGBTQ community. He is passionate about advocating for all folks, and giving back to the community is very important to him.

As well as regularly volunteering as a counsellor he helps out on tables, and wherever else he is needed. When he’s not working or volunteering, Aaron can often be found singing with one of the two choirs he is part of, Cor Flammae and Vancouver Cantata singers.

Aaron also loves to hike, being outdoors, canoeing, and he’s also a bit of an artist. He paints and sculpts in his free time, primarily fantasy art based on popular culture.

Aaron, we thank you for your kindness, your openness and your great sense of humour and dedication to the centre. We hope you continue to volunteer with us for a very long time!
