March Volunteer of the Month: Kristina M.!

February 22, 2017

Kristina, our volunteer of the month for March, continues to be a great addition to our Information and Referral Program and an upbeat voice brightening up our Mondays. Thank you for all of your work, K.

How did you get involved with QMUNITY?

I’ve lived in the West End on and off for 10 years. So, when I decided to actively commit more time to volunteering I really wanted to work within the community. I already knew about QMUNITY, so I was thrilled when I applied and Danny contacted me for an interview.

Tell me a bit about yourself.

I am a lifelong Vancouverite, which is a bit of a rarity, I know. My parents are both immigrants, I’m a mixed-race Filipino-Austrian-Canadian. My folks are both community activists in their own right, but my mom has always been hugely influential, and raised us all to believe we have a social responsibility to give back to our community. I work with a few other organizations, most recently, AIDS Vancouver – where I help facilitate a women’s only grocery program for women impacted with HIV. Fun facts: I am a poached egg enthusiast, street art explorer, hip-hop head and loud-mouthed feminist. I also love food you eat with your hands. I’m planning to go back to school for political science and gender, race and social justice studies.

What’s your favourite aspect of working at QMUNITY?

The diversity of the people I meet and the fact that the work that we do is intersectional.

Tell me a short story of an interaction at QMUNITY that stands out for you?

Working with Cass at the Older Adults and Seniors Meeting and getting the opportunity to meet with and speak to older adults and seniors in the LGBTQ community was a special experience. Having two parents who are now both seniors, it was particularly rewarding to be a part of something that had their needs top of mind. Cass really inspires me in the work that he is doing to create phenomenal programming, with a bottom up approach, for a demographic that is often further marginalized.

What is your favourite item of clothing?

I’m sort of obsessed with pants that taper at the bottom, and men’s plaid button-ups right now.

If you were followed around by a band to be the soundtrack of your life, who would it be?

I don’t have a band, but if I could have Patrick Stewart narrate my life I think that would be AMAZING.

What’s always in your handbag/bag/ pockets?

It’s sort of an all or nothing situation. I either carry just my phone and wallet or I have everything you could possibly imagine in my bag, you know in case something needs MacGyver’ing.

Fictional character you would most like to give a hug to?

Maybe Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh, he looks like he needs one.

Where is your favourite place on Earth?

My favourite place on Earth is probably my family home. I come from a massive family and whenever we are together there’s so much love, laughter, and energy around.

If you could be anyone else, who would you be?

Rihanna says “the minute you learn to love yourself, you won’t want to be anyone else” I subscribe to a similar philosophy.

Message from Staff – Dan: Thank you so much for all of your hard work. I cannot believe the amount of impact you’ve had on our organization in such a short time! You’re amazing! (Except you don’t like Beyoncé enough, so that’s where we don’t see eye to eye!)
