MJ is our Volunteer of the Month for October!
September 29, 2017
QMUNITY would like to recognize MJ for his dedication, passion, and leadership within the Youth Program. Thanks, MJ!
1. How did you get involved with QMUNITY?
I learned about QMUNITY over pancakes when I first moved to the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, and began volunteering with the Youth Drop-In Program in April. I am passionate about LGBTQ/2S stories and working with youth, so GAB was a great fit.
2. Tell me a bit about yourself.
I grew up in Kamloops on the traditional lands of the Secwepemc people, and moved to Victoria to attend the University of Victoria, located on the unceded territory of the Coast and Strait Salish peoples. After receiving my Bachelors of Political Science and Women’s Studies, I spent the following year backpacking Southeast Asia and Australia. Since being back on the West Coast, I can be found dancing in my kitchen or reading my friends their horoscopes.
3. What’s your favourite part of volunteering at QMUNITY?
My favourite part about being involved with QMUNITY is how much I learn from the youth, other volunteers and Youth Workers. It inspires me to bring this mindfulness to my personal and professional networks.
4. Tell me a short story of an interaction at QMUNITY that stands out for you.
Queer Prom still resonates with me. I am grateful to be part of a community that hosted such an inclusive and expressive event. Many interactions with youth that evening instil me with hope for the future.
5. What does your happy place look like?
A&W when Teen Burgers are $3.50.
6. If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why?
Starfish. No explanation necessary.
7. What items could you not survive without?
My bike and a non-plastic water bottle.
8. What’s your favourite way to spend a day in Vancouver?
Wreck Beach.
Message from Esther and Molly, Youth Workers:
MJ has been such a consistent and wonderful presence at drop-in! In the summer months, when it can be hard to find volunteers, MJ came every Wednesday. With his laughter, easy-going and friendly personality, we love having him at GAB!
