March Volunteer of the Month: Nick M.
February 29, 2016
March’s spectacular volunteer of the month is Nick M. Congratulations, Nick! Nick is a practicum student who is doing his placement at QMUNITY with the Older Adults program. He’s studying his Masters in Psychological counselling at Adler University, and has been working with us since October. He’d like to thank his supervisor, Allison, for helping create such a rewarding and amazing placement. “Allison is one of the kindest, most amazing people I’ve ever met, and I’m so lucky to have had this chance to work with her, she’s been a great inspiration and support.”
So, Nick, what’s your favourite thing about working at QMUNITY?
Well, I’d have to say what I enjoy the most is the fact I am part of this amazing team that does so much for the LGBTQ community.
QMUNITY is an incredible organisation, making changes both at a systemic and interpersonal level.
And why did you choose to apply for your placement at QMUNITY?
I have a gay sibling and growing up with them made me become more aware of the issues facing the LGBTQ community.
I felt like I wanted to do something, to be part of the societal changes that we are undergoing.
I was so excited to be offered a position with the Older Adults Program. There’s an assumption that they’re not as vulnerable as youth but that is simply not the case. They have their own set of issues that are unique and the way society faces those issues needs to be reformed.
If you could only take six books to a desert island, what would they be?
Lord of the Flies, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone, I, Partridge, The B.F.G, The God Delusion, Island Survival For Dummies
Okay, so if you could pick any TV show character to be your best friend for a day, who would it be?
Ricky Gervais! Any time he does any interview he’s always an idiot, and I respect that.
Where is your favourite place on earth?
Airport bars! I love them all.
Except for the Calgary one, that one was terrible. I’m sure there’s other places I love more, but nothing that springs to mind.
And finally, what is your favourite article of clothing?
I just love old man cardigans!
Message from Q: Thank you, Nick for all you do here at QMUNITY. You’re a great ally, keen to learn, and you know how to use your professional expertise and your social justice commitment to shine a light on LGBTQ seniors’ issues and causes.
